Graystar are an indie band formed by Liverpool singer/songwriter Dominic James and co-writer and lead guitarist Craig Finnie. They have played gigs all over the UK and are achieving a lot of media acclaim for their debut album and live performances.
They were formed in 2003 by Dominic James, and the band’s first gig came 7 months after the first practice session, at Bannermans, Edinburgh in April 2004. As a 5 piece, they played over 70 gigs together, gaining numerous plays on mainstream radio and receiving great reviews for their live set. In the face of new wave indie fashion, graystar were playing something different and eclectic, which was earning them a reputation for playing only the music they believed in.
They released a series of singles starting with “Life Support’ in February 2005, working with producer Rick Scott at Banana Row studios. It practically bankrupted the band, but songs of real quality came out of the studio. ‘Free’ won an award in a UK song writing competition and was featured as one of the ‘songs of the week’ on XFM London. The EP “Singles” won the band lots of media acclaim and complimented the showcase gigs which won the band many admirers.Mark Taylor joined in 2006 for nearly a year and is featured on the album track ‘More or Less’, which was released in June 2006.
The band headlined The Cavern in February and April 2007 and performed in the IPO festival there in May. After seeing graystar live there BBC DJ Spencer Leigh wrote the sleeve notes for the album and invited them on his show. Work over the summer of 2007 meant the final completion of the album “A Million Pieces” which was released on September 8th 2007, 4 years after the graystar were formed.
Graystar have been played on some great radio shows: In November 2007 “Free” was played on the Iain Anderson Show and “Cry No More” was featured on the Saturday Breakfast Show on BBC Radio Scotland. The band have achieved numerous plays on mainstream stations including XFM Scotland and Kick FM, are being strongly supported by BBC Radio Merseyside who have invited them back for a second live session. DJ’s Specer Leigh ( who is also a music writer ) and Dave Monks ( whose show “The Pool” showcases new Liverpool bands ) are giving the band lots of promotion.
Graystar are continuing to play showcase gigs and will release a new EP in May, working again with superb producer Rick Scott, who will also produce graystar’s 2nd album due for release in the autumn of 2008.
